Our Volunteer Leah B and her daughter Claire – Withrow Market

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have lived in Riverdale for 13 years. I used to teach English as a Second Language at a community college, but I decided to stay home with my kids (now aged 11, 8 and 5). We are a vegetarian family and we feel strongly about eating healthy, locally grown food.

What inspired you to volunteer with the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market?

I have been shopping at the market since it opened many years ago! I read the call for volunteers on the website and knew it was a great chance for me to get involved and help out.

What has the experience been like so far?

The first year I volunteered, I was helping vendors with set-up and working at the information booth answering customers’ questions. It was great to be helpful and participate in that way, but I wanted to get more involved and learn about how a farmers’ market actually works…so I joined the Market Committee last year. I have gained many new skills, such as interviewing and hiring candidates, inviting special guests to the market, and planning a large event. It’s been a very rewarding experience.

What is your favourite aspect of being a volunteer?

I like knowing that I am an active and helpful member of the community. On Saturday mornings, it’s so great to be at the park early to chat with the vendors and meet new customers.

And most importantly – What’s on your farmers’ market shopping list?

Carrots!! Once you’ve tried carrots from the farmers’ market, you’ll never be able to eat one from a grocery store again. I always pick up some beets, kale, bread, cheese and of course wine for our Saturday night dinner!

Withrow Park Farmers’ Market wouldn’t exist without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. If you love being outside, eating yummy local food and being part of a wonderful community initiative, then the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market is the place for you! JOIN US!
