Tell us a bit about yourselves?
We moved to the Riverdale neighbourhood in mid-2012, Dan from Bloordale, and Bronwyn from the Durham Region. We have since relocated to the Pocket. By day, Dan is a project manager in the research office at a Toronto college and Bronwyn is a legal administrative assistant. By night we can be found at local comedy shows laughing until tears stream down our faces, discovering the many bike trails around the city, baking up a storm**, and taking in the many eats and events that Toronto has to offer. The city definitely keeps us on our toes.
What inspired you both to volunteer with Withrow Park Farmers’ Market?
We were checking out Withrow Park one weekend towards the beginning of fall 2012, and happened upon a small (but mighty) farmers market taking place in the park. We really loved being able to get fresh produce, coffee, cheese, and bread from a place so close to our own backyard, and became avid market goers. Both searching for ways to become involved in our new community, we decided that we’d like to help out when the next year’s season rolled around. Two seasons later, here we are!
What has the experience been like so far?
The experience has been fantastic. We have had the opportunity to interact with a lot of interesting, friendly people in our time at the market: volunteers, vendors, and patrons alike. We get to sit outside in the sunshine, and shop from many of our vendors. We also get to pet a lot of dogs, too. So. many. dogs.
What is your favourite aspect of being volunteers?
We love the sense of community the market creates, and being a part of it. The people involved in the market are really friendly and are always ready to help each other out. And the proximity to the ice cream sandwiches definitely doesn’t hurt.
And most importantly – What’s on your farmers’ market shopping list?
Bronwyn waits very (In)patiently all season for peaches from Feast of Fields. We also love ice cream sandwiches and ice pops from Sweet Sammies, greens from Cookstown Greens, coffee from the market tent and some of the many delicious pastries from The Local Cafe (Bus Kitchen).
Bronwyn bakes, Dan grazes.
Withrow Park Farmers’ Market wouldn’t exist without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. If you love being outside, eating yummy local food and being part of a wonderful community initiative, then the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market is the place for you! JOIN US!
